Form OIR-B1-1802 · all or nothing
This is the part of a garage door nobody explains, and it costs Naples homeowners real money every year. Florida’s wind mitigation credit for opening protection is all or nothing — one unprotected opening cancels it for the entire house. If your garage door is the last gap, closing it usually returns $400 to $1,200 a year on the windstorm portion of your premium.

When your insurer sends an inspector, they fill in form OIR-B1-1802 — the Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection form. One section of it covers opening protection, and it asks a single question in effect: is every opening in this house protected?
Every opening means every one. Windows, sliding doors, entry doors, skylights and the garage door. There is no partial score, no “most of them” category, no weighting by size. The house either qualifies for the opening protection credit or it does not.
Two minutes on the phone and you will know what is wrong and roughly what it costs.
Because it is the opening people forget. Over the last twenty years plenty of Naples homeowners have put impact windows in, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars of them, and left a builder-grade garage door on the front of the house because it still worked fine.
That homeowner is getting nothing for the windows. Not a reduced credit — nothing, on that line of the form. And the garage door is very often the cheapest of all the openings to bring up to standard.
The arithmetic that surprises people. A wind-rated double door installed runs $3,200 to $5,500. If closing that one gap releases a credit worth $800 a year, the door has paid for a meaningful share of itself inside five or six years — while also being the thing standing between a 170 mph gust and your roof structure.
Usually on the end stile of one of the sections. It needs to show a design pressure in psf and a Florida Product Approval number, and for impact-rated doors a reference to ANSI/DASMA 115.
A rated door with no permit is a door the county has no record of. Some inspectors will accept the label alone; plenty will not. This is the main reason we file the permit rather than skipping it.
Since April 2026 the form requires at least one photo of each rated component. That is a real change and it caught a lot of contractors out — if nobody photographed your door label at installation, somebody has to go and do it now.
If the windows are impact-rated to one standard and the garage door to another, expect questions. Bring your paperwork to the inspection rather than hoping.
Golden Gate to Marco Island. Price agreed before anyone drives out, and nothing owed if you decide not to go ahead.
Wind-rated garage doors are an eligible upgrade under the state grant program, and for a lot of Naples households it changes the decision entirely.
Households at or below 80% of area median income can receive up to $10,000 with no match required.
Between 80% and 120% of area median, the grant works on a 2:1 match — $5,000 of your own money unlocks the full $10,000.
The home must be insured for $700,000 or less and built before January 1, 2008. An inspection comes first.
The program runs in cycles and waitlists are normal. We will tell you where it actually stands when you call rather than promising money that is not currently there.

We fit garage doors. We are not insurance agents, and premiums vary by carrier, by policy and by house. The $400 to $1,200 figure is the range we see reported by customers in this county, and the statutory ceiling on wind mitigation credits applies to the windstorm portion of the premium, not the whole bill.
The reliable part is the mechanism, not the number: opening protection is all or nothing, and an unrated garage door is the most common reason a Naples house fails it. What your specific carrier pays for fixing that is a conversation with your agent — and worth having before you buy the door, so you know what you are getting back.
It can, but only as part of the whole house. The opening protection credit on form OIR-B1-1802 is all or nothing: every opening has to be protected. Where the garage door is the last unprotected opening, closing that gap typically returns $400 to $1,200 a year on the windstorm portion of the premium. Your carrier and policy decide the exact figure.
The Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection form — the standard wind mitigation report your insurer uses in Florida. It records roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connection, roof geometry, secondary water resistance and opening protection.
Yes. The opening protection section has no partial category. If one glazed or non-glazed opening is unprotected, the house does not qualify on that line — which is why the garage door, as the largest and most often overlooked opening, matters so much.
The form now requires photo documentation of each rated component. In practice that means somebody has to have photographed your garage door label and approval number. We do it as part of every installation and hand you the file.
The permit is what puts the rated door on record for your address. Some inspectors accept the label alone, many want the permit. It costs $150 to $285 in Collier County and we file it as part of the job.
Yes. If your door is already rated but nobody documented it, we can inspect it, photograph the label and the approval number and give you the file. That is a service call rather than an installation.
You get the price before anyone drives out, and if you decide not to go ahead you owe us nothing.
