Garage Door Cable Repair in Naples, FL

Garage door cable repair in Naples is one of those jobs that is cheap today and expensive next week. A frayed or snapped lift cable puts the full weight of the door on one side, and within a couple of days it has pulled the track out of line, bent a bracket, or dropped the door off the rollers entirely. We re-run cables in pairs, check the drums, and reset the tension evenly.

How to Tell a Cable Has Gone

  • The door climbs crooked. One side rises and the other hangs back, so the door sits at an angle in the opening.
  • A loose steel cable hanging down beside the track, or coiled in a nest at the bottom of the drum.
  • The door drops fast on the way down, or lands hard.
  • A grinding or slapping noise as the cable rubs where it should not.
  • Visible fraying. Look at the bottom bracket where the cable attaches. Broken strands like a wire brush mean it is on borrowed time.
  • Rust. Near the Gulf, cables corrode where they sit against the drum. A rusty cable is a cable that is going to fail.

Do not run the opener. With one cable gone, the opener drags the door up on one side only. That is how a cable failure turns into a bent track, a creased panel and a door off its rollers — three problems instead of one.

Why Cables Fail

They wear where you cannot see

The cable spends its life winding onto a grooved drum. Over thousands of cycles the strands abrade against each other and against the drum. The damage starts inside the lay of the cable and works outward, which is why a cable that looks fine from six feet away can be nearly through.

Salt air

This is the Naples-specific one. Within a mile or two of the water, chloride gets into the strands and corrodes them from the inside. Coastal homes go through cables noticeably faster, and galvanized cable is worth the small upcharge.

A door out of balance

If the springs are tired or mismatched, the cables carry load they were never rated for. A cable failure on a door with old springs is usually a symptom, not the disease — which is why we check spring balance on every cable job. Spring repair →

A cable that jumped the drum

If the door is closed with slack in the cable — because it landed on something, or because the opener kept driving after it hit the floor — the cable can come off the drum and rewind wrongly. That kinks it, and a kinked cable is finished.

What the Repair Involves

  1. Secure the doorClamped and the opener disconnected, so nothing moves while the tension comes off.
  2. Release spring tensionThe cables are only under load because the springs are wound. That tension comes off first, with winding bars, in controlled turns.
  3. Replace both cablesMatched to the door height and weight. We fit them as a pair — the other one is the same age and has done the same number of cycles.
  4. Check and set the drumsGrooved or scored drums chew a new cable in months. If they are worn they get replaced now rather than on the next call-out.
  5. Re-tension and balanceEqual tension on both sides, the door level in the opening, and it should hold position halfway up on its own.

A word on doing this one yourself. The cables are only slack when the springs are unwound, and unwinding springs is the job that hurts people. If the door is up and the cable has gone, there are several hundred pounds of stored energy sitting above your head. This is a call, not a Saturday project.

Cable questions

Straight Answers

How much does garage door cable replacement cost in Naples?

A pair of cables runs $150 to $300 installed. Galvanized cables for homes near the water are $180 to $340. If a drum is worn it is another $90 to $180 each, and if the track has been pulled out of line the whole job runs $200 to $400.

Can I still use the door with one broken cable?

No. With one cable gone the opener drags the door up on one side, and within a day or two you have a bent track, a creased panel or a door off its rollers. Leave it closed and call.

Should both cables be replaced?

Yes. The second cable has done exactly the same number of cycles and lives in the same salt air. Replacing one and leaving the other means a second call-out within months.

How long do garage door cables last?

Inland, eight to twelve years is normal. Within a mile or two of the Gulf, expect less — salt corrodes the strands from the inside. Galvanized cable buys back most of that difference.

Why did my cable come off the drum?

Usually slack in the cable while the door was down — the door landed on something, or the opener kept driving after the door hit the floor. The cable unwinds, rewinds crooked and kinks. Adjusting the opener down-travel stops it happening again.

Is a cable failure a spring problem too?

Often, yes. If the springs are tired the cables carry load they were not rated for. We check spring balance on every cable job and tell you if the springs are the underlying cause.
