Garage Door Spring Repair in Naples, FL

Garage door spring repair in Naples starts with a bang you hear from inside the house. The spring lets go, the door turns from forty pounds into two hundred and fifty, and the opener strains and quits. It is the single most common call we take in Collier County, we carry the springs on the truck, and most doors are running again within an hour of us arriving.

How to Tell a Spring Has Broken

You do not need to know anything about garage doors to work this one out. Any two of these and it is almost certainly the spring.

  • A loud bang from the garage, often in the early morning or late evening when the temperature moves. People regularly think something fell over or a gun went off.
  • A two-inch gap in the coil. Look at the steel shaft above the door. A torsion spring is a tight continuous coil; a broken one has a clean gap where it separated.
  • The door lifts four inches and stops, or the opener hums, strains and reverses.
  • It is impossibly heavy by hand. With the opener released, a balanced door lifts with two fingers. A door with a broken spring feels like lifting a fridge.
  • It goes up crooked on doors with two springs where only one has failed.

Please leave it alone until we get there. The springs are the only thing carrying the weight of the door. With one broken there is nothing holding it, and a door that is propped, forced or run on the opener can come down hard. If you have to get a car out, pull the red release cord, lift with someone helping, and do not stand anyone in the opening.

Torsion Springs and Extension Springs

Torsion springs

Mounted on a steel shaft above the opening, they wind and unwind to counterbalance the door. Almost every door built in the last twenty-five years uses them. They are safer, they last longer, and when they fail they fail where you can see it.

Extension springs

Long springs running alongside the horizontal tracks, stretching as the door closes. Common on older Naples homes. If yours has them and there is no safety cable running through the middle of each spring, that is worth fixing on the same visit — without it, a snapping extension spring becomes a projectile.

Why we replace both

On a door with a matched pair, the second spring has done exactly the same number of cycles as the one that just broke. Replacing one and leaving the other means a second call-out within months, and you pay the labour twice. The price difference on the day is small; the difference over two years is not.

Why Springs Break Early in Southwest Florida

A spring is rated in cycles, not years. One up and one down is a cycle. A standard 10,000-cycle spring on a Naples home that opens the door three or four times a day gets you roughly six or seven years. Three things cut that short here.

Salt air

Within a mile or so of the Gulf, chloride pits black oil-tempered steel from inside the coil where nothing is visible. The spring is corroding for years before it snaps. Galvanized springs cost a little more and solve it.

An unbalanced door

If the door is heavier on one side, or the springs were sized to the wrong door weight to begin with, they work harder than they were rated for and fail early. We weigh and balance the door on every visit.

Heat cycling

A garage that swings from cool overnight to well over a hundred degrees by afternoon expands and contracts the steel every single day. It is why so many springs let go first thing in the morning.

Seasonal homes

A door that sits unused from May to November has grease that sets hard. The first few cycles after six months idle are rough on a spring that was already near the end.

What the Repair Involves

  1. Release and secure the doorThe opener is disconnected and the door clamped so nothing can move while the shaft is under tension.
  2. Unwind the old spring safelyWith winding bars, in controlled quarter turns. This is the part that hurts people who try it themselves — there are several hundred pounds of stored energy in a wound spring.
  3. Measure for the replacementWire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction. Guessing any one of them gives you a door that is too heavy or too light and a spring that dies early.
  4. Fit and wind the new springTo the correct number of turns for your door height, then set the drums and cable tension evenly on both sides.
  5. Balance and testThe door should stay put wherever you stop it, halfway up included. Then we reset the opener travel and force, and test the safety reverse.

Standard or High-Cycle?

This is the one decision worth thinking about, because it is the difference between doing this again in six years or in fifteen.

Spring Installed
Single torsion spring, standard 10,000 cycle From $179
Pair of torsion springs, standard From $219
High-cycle upgrade, 25,000 to 50,000 cycle From $309
Galvanized coastal springs, pair From $269
Extension spring, single From $129
Extension springs, pair From $179
Safety cables added to extension springs From $49
Call-out, emergency, night, weekend or holiday No extra charge

If you use the garage as your main door in and out of the house — and most people in Naples do — the high-cycle springs are the better buy. You are looking at an extra $150 or so for roughly two to three times the life.

Why Not to Do This One Yourself

We are not precious about DIY. Change your own bottom seal, lubricate your own rollers, reset your own opener travel. Springs are the exception, and it is worth saying plainly why.

A wound torsion spring stores several hundred pounds of force. It is released through two steel bars, a quarter turn at a time, and the failure mode when a bar slips is the bar leaving at speed in a small enclosed space. Emergency rooms in Florida see these injuries every year. The parts cost forty dollars online and the job looks simple on video; the gap between looking simple and being safe is the whole job.

Spring questions

Straight Answers

How much does garage door spring replacement cost in Naples?

A single torsion spring runs $200 to $350 installed and a matched pair runs $250 to $450. A high-cycle upgrade is $350 to $600 and lasts two to three times longer. Galvanized coastal springs are $300 to $520 for the pair. After-hours calls add $75 to $200.

How long does it take to replace a garage door spring?

About an hour for a standard residential door, including balancing the door and resetting the opener. We carry the common sizes, so it is usually done on the first visit rather than ordered in.

Should I replace one spring or both?

Both, on a matched pair. The second spring has done the same number of cycles as the one that just broke and will follow it within months. Replacing both now costs a little more in parts and saves you a whole second call-out.

How long should a garage door spring last in Florida?

A standard 10,000-cycle spring on a door used three or four times a day lasts roughly six or seven years. Near the Gulf, salt corrosion inside the coil brings that down. High-cycle springs rated 25,000 to 50,000 cycles commonly run fifteen years or more.

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

Only if you have to, and carefully. Pull the red emergency release, lift with help because the door will weigh 150 to 250 pounds, and do not leave it propped open. Never run the opener against it — you will burn out the motor or bend the panels.

Why did my spring break in cold weather?

Steel contracts as it cools, which puts extra stress on a spring already near the end of its life. It is why so many break on the coolest morning of the month and why the failure so often happens at first use rather than mid-cycle.

Do you carry galvanized springs for homes near the water?

Yes, and within a mile or so of the Gulf we recommend them as standard. Salt air pits black oil-tempered springs from inside the coil, where you cannot see the damage until it lets go.
