A bang like a gunshot, then a door that will not lift. Springs are rated in cycles, not years, and in Palm Springs most of them are overdue rather than unlucky.
Stop using the opener. With a broken spring the motor is being asked to lift the entire weight of the door — often 180 to 260 pounds — on a gear train built to move a fraction of that. Every press strips the gear a little further. Pull the red release cord with the door closed, leave it down, and call.
Garage door spring repair in Palm Springs covers 33461 and neighbourhoods including Lake Clarke Gardens, Village Park and the neighbourhoods off Congress Avenue. A torsion spring is not rated in years, it is rated in cycles — one open and one close. A standard residential spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles.
A household that uses the garage as its main door does four to six cycles a day, which is 1,500 to 2,200 a year. Against a 10,000-cycle rating that is a six to seven year spring. So when one lets go on a ten-year-old door in Palm Springs, nothing unusual has happened — the spring simply finished.
Look at the steel shaft above the door opening. A torsion spring that has broken shows a clear gap in the coil, usually a finger wide, and the two ends will have sprung apart. If the door has extension springs — the long springs running alongside the horizontal tracks — a break is obvious: the spring will be in two pieces or hanging.
The other tell is weight. Pull the release cord with the door closed and try to lift it by hand. A balanced door feels like eight to ten pounds. A door with a broken spring feels like the car is attached to it. If it feels that heavy, stop lifting.
On a two-spring door, both springs were wound the same day, from the same wire, and have taken the same number of cycles. Replacing only the broken one buys a few months and a second call-out fee — except ours is free, and we would still rather not come back.
The other reason is balance. A new spring on one side and a tired spring on the other pulls the door unevenly, which loads the cables unequally and is a reliable way to end up with a door off the track.
If your original springs lasted seven years, an identical replacement set will last about seven more. A 25,000-cycle set costs roughly $130 more and lasts two to three times as long. On a door that is the household’s main entrance it is usually the last spring job you ever pay for, and the labour is identical either way.
Where standard springs still make sense: a door used a couple of times a week, a rental you are about to sell, or a door already close to replacement for other reasons.
A lot of Palm Springs housing predates 1970, which means small single-car openings and very often extension springs — the long springs that run alongside the horizontal tracks rather than sitting on a bar above the door.
On a large share of those doors there is no safety cable threaded through the spring. That cable does nothing at all until the spring snaps, at which point it stops several pounds of steel under tension crossing the garage. If you can see straight through the middle of your springs, you do not have one. We fit them as a matter of course.
Tell us the door size and whether there are one or two springs above it. We will give you the figure on the phone.

A single torsion spring fitted starts from $179. A matched pair starts from $219. High-cycle springs rated for 25,000 cycles start from $309. Extension springs with safety cables start from $139 a pair. If the failure also took a cable off the drum, cables start from $119 for both sides.
No call-out fee and no night, weekend or holiday surcharge. You hear the figure before anyone drives out, and if you decide not to go ahead you owe nothing.
We carry the common wire sizes on the van, so it is usually one visit rather than two.

Both, on any door with two. They were wound the same day from the same wire and have taken the same number of cycles, so the second one is close behind. Replacing one also leaves the door pulling unevenly, which is how doors come off the track.
It is the one job on a garage door we tell people not to attempt. A wound torsion spring holds several hundred pounds of stored energy and releasing it without the correct winding bars causes serious injuries every year.
Because springs are rated in cycles, not years. A standard spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles and a family using the garage as its main door reaches that in six to seven years. Florida humidity and, near the coast, salt pitting shorten it further.
On a door that gets daily use, usually yes. They are rated for 25,000 cycles instead of 10,000, cost around $130 more and the labour is identical, so they are often the last spring job you pay for.
Most spring calls are handled the same day. We carry the common wire sizes on the van, so it is normally one visit.
Describe the noise and what the door is doing and we will usually name the fault on the phone.
